Matte Black is one of those colors that look great in other people’s homes. Or at least it can seem that way. With such a bold and dramatic presence, Matte Black might feel a little intimidating when redesigning your bathroom, especially when there are seemingly safer options like Vibrant® Brushed Nickel or Polished Chrome.

The reality is, however, that Matte Black is just as versatile as other more conventional finishes and can add an elegant exclamation point to nearly any design style. To help you visualize the possibilities, our KOHLER Bathroom Design Service experts created three unique designs incorporating Matte Black in a variety of ways.

Bathroom #1: Mixed Metals in Mid-Century Modern

Combining Matte Black with brushed gold finishes might not be an obvious choice, but the result when paired with white walls and warm wood tones is a classy and contemporary update on the mid-century modern style. The warmth of brushed gold and wood soften the stark contrast of the blacks and whites so that the room feels modern without becoming cold and uninviting.

Bathroom #2: Classic and Contemporary Black and White

This timeless design combines traditional and modern elements to create a look that will never go out of style. The black vanity makes a bold impression that is balanced by the soft blue/green walls and white marble countertop. The Matte Black faucets and accents add contemporary flourishes that are complemented by the Polished Chrome of the sconces. Finally, traditional white rectangular shower tile is given a dynamic update with a diagonal herringbone pattern and asymmetrical spacing.

Bathroom #3: Bungalow Bold

Inspired by the historic Beverly Hills Hotel, a dramatic Martinique banana leaf wall covering sets an energizing tone for this bold yet playful space. Black finds varying expressions, ranging from the subtle shading and texture of the tile floor to the glossy countertop to the Matte Black faucet and mirror trim, adding to the casual eclecticism of the room. Details like the deep-beveled subway tile and natural wood surfaces add depth and texture to complete the aesthetic.
